Don’t Expect Immediate Compliance
Don’t Expect Immediate Compliance
“Mica get ready for bed,” Mom calls from the nest room. Mica’s attention stays glued to his helicopter Leggo set he is building. Seconds later, Mother, annoyed by his lack of movement, yells more firmly, “Did you hear what I said? I said. ‘Get ready for bed!’”
It is important that we don’t expect our child to instantly respond to what we ask. Respect the fact that your children need a minute to finish what they are doing before they can move onto your task. If your kids are reading, ask them to finish the paragraph and then ______ (get ready for bed, etc…)Would you jump up as soon as our spouse or child called you? Kids should be given enough respect to finish what they are doing before moving onto your task.
We all need time for our brain to process information especially if it is emotional. In this case you may want to say, “You don’t have to answer me right now. I will give you sometime to think about it.” When you do this, you are more likely to get a honest answer from your child.
Practice: This week, work on showing more respect to your family members about timing. This doesn’t mean that they don’t have to listen to you. It just means they need the same respect we do.
